TA-65 is a small molecule extracted from the purified root of the Astragalus membranaceus plant, and is the result of an investigation on telomerase activation.
Telomeres are specialized structures at the end of chromosomes, whose main function is to protect them from the degradation they suffer over time and due to cell division and oxidative damage, and so they are essential genetic elements.
Each time a cell divides, it duplicates its DNA, including the base sequence constituting the telomere. But this process of replication is not able to copy the entire telomere sequence, so it becomes progressively shorter and telomeric DNA is gradually lost. When the telomere is very short, the cell can not divide further and it dies, and that is why we age.
Telomerase is an enzyme that synthesizes a specific DNA sequence in telomeres and plays an important role in this process, as it is able to preserve telomere length.
It is activated during fetal development, thus protecting telomeres during this stage of expansion, but just before birth, it renders inactive and this marks the beginning of telomeres' erosion in most tissues throughout life.
Although essential for stem cells and germ cells (the cells responsible for the creation of ova and spermatozoa), and which the body can not do without, there are also tissues with continuous cellular turnover that are capable of overregulating telomerase during tissue regeneration.
However, these periods of activation are not sufficient to prevent the loss of telomeres, and this is exacerbated by a decrease in the ability to activate telomerase during ageing and stress. The inability to maintain telomere length with age has been linked to decreasing health and an increased risk of illness.
