The fruits of the prickly pear plant, or nopal (Opuntia ficus-indica) have been traditionally consumed in Mediterranean countries. In Latin American countries like Mexico, the plant itself is also eaten. It is part of Aztec mythology, where it was seen as the plant of life, as apparently it never dies, because when it dries a new plant can grow from it.
Prickly pear fruit contains water, carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins, minerals and pigments such as those derived from betalain (indicaxanthin and betanin).
They are used in desserts, sauces, to sweeten, ice cream, condiments, snacks and infusions.
As it is a dried product, powdered prickly pear has virtually none of the water contained in the fresh fruit, but it can be mixed with water to take it.
Prickly Pear powder has a high fibre content (40.2 g per 100 g, which represents 13.7 g per 100 kcal).
It has a low content of fats, saturated fats and sodium (salt).
It is important to follow a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
