It is important to follow a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
Spirulina is a tiny, barely half a millimeter long, spiral-shaped blue-green algae that stands out for its very high percentage of protein (60 g of protein for every 100 g of spirulina), which is 71% of its energy value.
There is a higher amount of all essential amino acids per gram of protein in powdered bio spirulina than in the high quality protein suggested by FAO/WHO.
It is also high in vitamins B12, K, A, B6, B2, B1, D, E and B3, selenium, iodine, chromium, iron, manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, calcium and zinc, being especially high in vitamin B12, K, A (as beta-carotene) and B6 and selenium, iodine, chromium and iron. For this reason it is not advisable to exceed a daily intake of 6 grams of spirulina bio powder.
Spirulina contains distinctive phytonutrients, such as carotenoids, chlorophyll, phycocyanin, and ribonucleic and deoxyribonucleic acids. When combined with iron in the body, chlorophyll is involved in the formation of hemoglobin.
Some potential benefits of spirulina have been postulated, among which are: its usefulness for supplementing the diet with proteins, its effect on general health, its role in the immune system and its action hindering the absorption of starch, which is a positive step on weight control.
